Good price pleasant to hold and use perfect for me.

My first Rotring was Rapid pro. I hated such shady feedback since the first push of the button. Also, it was heavy and the center of weight moved to the tip. The second was the legendary 600. I loved the build quality at the push of a button it gave tactile feedback very pleasant to use but it was also heavy. The weight distribution is more centered so definitely better with Rapid pro but every time I used it (I use it a lot as an architect) I couldn't get used to the weight as I prefer lightweight pencils. It was constantly slipping out of my fingers. I feel like I could break his metal tip any moment. I also tried Rotring Tikky (I have several with graphite of different hardness) it was so well made lightweight tactile feedback cheap very pleasant to use.

Don't get carried away by the hype

If you are like me reading mechanical pencil reviews on the internet you will read a lot about how great Rotring pencils are. This is not confirmed by reality because the famous quality is just not there. The knurling feels uncomfortably abrasive and if you look at it with a loupe you can see why – it's not very well done and there are a lot of jagged edges and it's clearly worse than on say a Pilot S10 or a Pentel Graphgear 500. Some people say they like sharp serrations but i can only imagine it is people who have mechanical pencils for reasons other than using them to write with for a period of time. I have nothing against collecting or buying the perceived premium product… but then please don't try to convince people that it is actually good for its purpose.

    Top price-performance

The only downside to the Rotring 500 is that it is not a Rotring 600. But otherwise great and for about half the price. Due to the plastic parts, the pen is a bit more top-heavy than the 600 that many people especially appreciate for writing. The grippy grip is identical to that of the 600. You get close to the tip for maximum control and a fine font. For me the significantly better alternative to the Pentel Graphgear 500 in the price category.

    Large value.

Before this 500 arrived from Japan I bought 2 Rotring 600's from English suppliers. I am very happy with both pencils. I thought I would be disappointed with the 500 when it arrived but I wasn't. It's just as good a quality instrument as the 600. While I prefer the extra weight of the all-metal 600, the plastic barrel on this one doesn't detract from its performance. The knurled metal handle feels identical to the black 600's but the plastic barrel has (just) slightly less grip than the black 600 but better grip than the silver model. Just in case you think I'm biased in favor of Rotring's I like to use all my (20+) mechanical pencils and pencil holders Pentel Staedtler Faber-Castell Koh-I-Noor etc. But the 500 stands out for its value for money.

    PERFECT

The corrugated metal handle and plastic 'body' make this great pen even more weighted and easier to draw than the all-metal model I've been using for 30 years. But if it falls to the hard floor like its predecessor, the point is unusable and irreparable. I only enjoy using it with Pentel 4B refills.

    Rotring light

The pen is similar in appearance and quality to the model 600. It is mainly made of plastic instead of aluminum. As a result, it doesn't quite have the haptic quality of the twice the expensive metal version. But I also find writing and drawing more pleasant because of the noticeably lower weight. The workmanship is better than comparable pens from other brands and the refills are relatively unbreakable and durable. The only bad thing is the insanely high prices for the replacement erasers. The built-in (effective) eraser allows for quick correction and work. But it is three times better to consider using a cheap 'regular' eraser instead of the equivalent of approx.

A good pencil and it was worth it to me!

Used to use a tikky but it got old and broke on me. So I looked around and almost went for a newer version of a tikky but decided I prefer the shape and style of the 500. It's just as comfortable for me the body has the same quality feel and the comfort in use is still there. Not a cheap pencil compared to other offerings but I'd say it's worth the price I paid.
